Freedom of Porn!

Abstract:

There is a bill that will be voted on by European Parliament next tuesday that would allegedly ban porn. All porn, from whatever you’re hiding on your computer, to the tastefully done sex scenes you may see on HBO. The bill words it as a ban on porn in ‘media’ but the language used is so vague that it could be applied virtually anywhere, sending a dirty text could possibly get you a fine or worse.

Now whatever your views on the pornography industry is you have to admit that the need for sexual release is necessary for the human race to survive without going completely insane. You may even say that sex is one of our natural rights. So It’s amazing to me that a government as progressive as the EU is actually seriously debating this bill, regardless of whether it actually passes or not. And for what? So a few hardcore conservatives can sleep better at night? Pretty much.

Whats even more amazing is that this idea stemmed from the eccentric brain of one obviously deluded woman, Kartika Liotard, who managed to push her anti-sex agenda all the way to Parliament. This reminded me so much of the Meadows reading on leverage points, not only how one small (crazy) shift can potentially overturn an entire system, but how obviously no one is thinking of the long term effects, only short-term goals. Yes, I’m sure Kartika will enjoy being around people as sexually frustrated as she is for a little bit, but is it worth the obvious increase of illegal sexual activity? Rape? Prostitution? The eventual outrage people will display when they can no longer express themselves sexually without the government spying on them?People need sex, and those without a partner will find ways to get it regardless of the consequences.

Jennifer, this is great example. Can you develop the discussion of leverage points? Maybe we can do this as a group in recitation.
